Dr. Theresa Sweeney Founder of Eco-Art Therapy

Dr. Theresa Sweeney

Dr. Theresa Sweeney first created a home for her designs and approaches through Call of the Wild Designs. Theresa was on a mission to reconnect people with the purity, wisdom, and spirit of nature within and around us.

Theresa Sweeney was a self-taught artist. Born in Rochester, New York. Theresa took to art as soon as she was able to hold a crayon. Throughout her childhood, she developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors. She spent many happy hours playing in the field behind her house, catching frogs in the pond at the end of her street, and camping with her family. Years of artistic expression and enjoying Nature made it clear that Theresa’s life would be centered upon her passions.

Theresa is also the founder of the revolutionary blended psychology, Eco-Art Therapy, a merging of art therapy with ecopsychology. She facilitated accredited online classes in Eco-Art Therapy for the Project NatureConnect’s degree program.

In the year 1999 Theresa, completed her Master’s Thesis entitled: Linking Art Therapy with Applied Ecopsychology. Integration of Self-Awareness Handbook of Experiential and Therapeutic Art and Nature Activities. In the year 2002, she completed a doctorate in Applied Ecopsychology and a Doctor of Education (EdD). Her work researched and documented the Founding of Eco-Art therapy – an Innovative Blending of Ecotherapy with Art Therapy.

Dr. Theresa Sweeney wrote for  Stone Voices: Connecting Art with Spirit, a published magazine, for over three years.

Her wildlife artwork is owned around the USA and has won numerous awards. She donated 30 original paintings to the Jack Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, Jupiter, Florida, and shared and sold a series of her work in Friday Harbor, Washington.

When Theresa passed away in 2014, she left a beautiful gift for humanity. Eco-Art Therapy and Project NatureConnect are committed to continuing Theresa’s work. Her presence has been missed, but her spirit continues to live in each of us and in the Eco-Art Therapy work she gifted to humanity.
